I don’t hear much from Matt the next week. He responds to my text but doesn’t offer much more. He’s not called in his raincheck. I’m worried that he’s decided my walking out was a good thing. He said he missed me, but was he just trying to be nice? Maybe we are too different in what we want in life.

I don’t want to think of any of it tonight. Tonight we’re getting together for one last ladies night at Izzy’s old apartment. Of course, we’ll still get together at her new place once she’s settled. But this apartment holds a lot of memories for us. I’m looking forward to a night of forgetting everything, even if it’s just for a couple of hours.

“Tell us what the new place is like,” Claire insists. We’re all sitting on the floor since her couch sold yesterday. Since Grayson’s was already furnished, they decided to sell most of hers.

“I can’t wait to have y’all over,” Izzy gushes. “There’s a balcony we can sit on when it’s nice out. And it has a fireplace in the living room.”

I’m happy that Izzy has found someone amazing in her life. Even if my own seems to be falling apart. I wonder if anyone else has noticed that she hasn’t touched the wine all evening. Not wanting to dampen the mood, I decide to wait until another day to delve into what’s going on there.

We’re discussing our next girls’ night at a local bar when Grayson walks in. I smile remembering the crush I had on him in high school. Ever since I’ve known him he’s made an art form at pulling off a personality of broody but charming at the same time.

“I hope you don’t mind us crashing the party, ladies. We did bring pizza,” he says, wrapping his arms around Izzy. I’ve just caught that he used the word “we” when Matt walks in carrying a pizza. He freezes when he sees me.

Grayson ribs him about something concerning curtains, which helps Matt recover. But I don’t think I’ll be able to recover my shock at seeing him. His face is covered in a fading bruise on one side running from his eye to his jaw.

He smiles pretending there’s not a problem. When he meets Grayson’s eyes, however, a scowl forms. Grayson shrugs. It’s obvious he’s set Matt up. He wouldn’t have come if he knew I was here. The feeling is so crushing, I can’t breathe.

“Hey, sweetie. Have some pizza,” Izzy says, squeezing my arm.

“Yeah.” I numbly accept a piece from her as the tension between Matt and I builds. I need to know what happened. Is it why he refuses to see me? If it was an accident, Izzy would have told me. The fact that she knows tells me that it was something worse. Even though he’s talking to my friends, he can’t seem to meet my eyes.

“Well, that’s it for me tonight,” Maggie announces. Since she teaches high school English at the same school Colin and I graduated from, she never overindulges on the weekdays.
